How to choose an LMS for your institute

Eight questions to answer before you commit to a learning platform, from live classes to data ownership.

Choosing a learning management system is one of the longest-lasting decisions an institute makes. Switching later means moving learners, content and payment history, so it pays to ask the right questions up front.

1. Does it handle live and on-demand learning together?

Most institutes now teach in both modes. Check whether live classes are built in or bolted on through a separate meeting tool, and whether recordings land in the course automatically.

2. Can you sell courses on the same platform?

A separate online shop means two logins, two databases and a broken journey from purchase to first lesson. Look for a storefront with coupons, bundles and the payment gateways your learners use.

3. Does it fit how you organise teaching?

Batches, branches, tutors and timetables vary widely. The platform should model your structure, not force you into someone else's.

4. Who owns the data?

Ask how you would export everything: learners, enrolments, results and payments. If the answer is vague, plan for pain later.

5. What does it cost as you grow?

Per-learner and per-host pricing can look small at first and grow fast. Model your costs at two and five times your current size.

6. Can learners use it on their phones?

Many learners will never open a laptop. Test the mobile experience, and ask whether a branded app is available.

7. Will it support assessments that matter?

Quizzes are easy. Timed mock exams, randomised question sets and marking for writing and speaking are not. Check what is possible before your exam season.

8. How hard is migration?

A good provider will move your learners and content for you, test the import, and run both systems in parallel for a short time.
